After a period of employment gloom for new graduates, 2004 looks set to see a strong upturn in job vacancies, according to a new survey. The survey, conducted by High Fliers, on behalf of the Association of Graduate Recruiters, asked 215 graduate employers, who took on over 11,000 new graduates between them in 2003, about their anticipated recruitment schemes this year. The survey found that: - The number of graduate vacancies is set to rise for the first time in three years, by 11.9% over 2003. London and the South-East to get the lion's share of vacancies, but the largest rises in numbers to be in the North-West and South-West.
- Median salaries are expected to increase across almost the whole country. The national median graduate salary to increase by 3.9%, to £21,100. London, Yorkshire and Scotland are predicted to experience the largest increases.
- Accountancy, engineering, retailing and investment banking firms, and the public sector to see the greatest vacancy numbers.
- Salaries for scientists, marketers and IT professionals to increase the most.
- Three quarters of employers do not expect to offer starting bonuses to new graduates.
