There was an 18.1% increase in applications for teacher training for the 2002/3 academic year in England, Scotland and Wales up to the end of July compared with the same time a year previously, according to the Graduate Teacher Training Registry.

  • In England, applications increased by 12.5%, with increases in some of the shortage subjects including IT (up by 69%) and physics (20.3%). Figures from the Teacher Training Agency (TTA) show that over 35,000 people began Initial Teacher Training in 2002, a rise of 7% on 2001 figures and the highest number since at least 1989/90.
  • Scotland saw the biggest increase in applications, at 133%, partly because of the 35-hour week.
  • Wales has seen applications increase year on year by 15%.

Working as a teacher

Use the resources in the education community to help you gain a teaching post.

You might want to know what quality of working life you can expect working as a teacher. If so, the National Foundation for Educational Research recently conducted a survey into this, comparing teachers' responses to those given by a 'norm group' of employees in a variety of occupations. The survey concluded that teachers:

  • rated their quality of working life more highly than the other employees surveyed two years earlier;
  • were more likely to experience job satisfaction and job security, and feel supported and informed;
  • were more likely than other employees to report feeling stressed and to be dissatisfied with their salaries and additional benefits.
