Developed by Graduate Prospects, in conjunction with the UK Council for Graduate Education, Prospects Apply Online is a free resource to help institutions broaden their recruitment campaigns for postgraduate students, and overseas students in particular.

It enables potential postgraduate students to apply electronically to HEIs participating in the scheme and can be accessed either via the institution's web site or from Prospects.ac.uk, which hosts the national postgraduate database.

The system is flexible to the needs of the institution. The online form is based on the Universities own application form and they can have more than one type. There is a section for universities to manage their applications where they can also be printed. Each institution chooses which courses will accept online applications and this can be changed, as necessary, to provide flexibility for courses that may need more or less applications.

The University of Essex went online in September 2004. Victoria Bartholomew, graduate student recruitment office, is positive about the benefits of a web-based application system:

We receive over 10,000 applications each year for postgraduate places across over two hundred Masters courses. Joining forces with Graduate Prospects for Apply Online will open our doors to many more potential recruits.

Victoria continued: “Prospects.ac.uk’s popularity offers us a different route to a wider audience, particularly overseas students. November is our peak season for applications when we will really appreciate the streamlining brought about by Apply Online. Application forms are generally completed more accurately online than with paper based versions; we also eliminate the vagaries of international postal systems.”
