Michelle

(Aged under 25, graduated 2000)

When I first graduated, I was unsure which career path to take due to the flexibility of my degree subject. Instead of rushing into an area of work I was unsure of, I decided to work abroad for three months as a courier in order to decide about my future.

This period of reflection was important as it allowed me to think about my options and then act constructively when I returned home. Upon my return, I held a temporary position as a sales assistant in a shop. Although this was not my decided career path, it was useful for motivating me into pursuing a professional job. It also allowed me to hone my team-working and communication skills ready for the professional job market.

I am now working for a company which gives advice and support to students. The job has allowed me as an individual to develop both personally and professionally. The position initially was temporary but I now have experience of good professional working practices, which has given me the opportunity to apply for a permanent position within the company. I have now become more focused within my job search and have decided to purse a career as a personal assistant. This is a long-term career goal, but my understanding has taught me that in order to gain the dream job, you have to gain the right type of experience and approach the right job channels to succeed.
