Where do they come from?

In this feature we show you what percentage of graduates working in a particular occupation, eg business & finance professionals, are from a particular subject area eg accountancy. In this example, 20% of business & finance professionals are accountancy graduates.

The table includes some vocational subject areas not covered in the individual subject breakdowns found in What Do Graduates Do? 2004 and these are marked by an asterisk.

Key findings:

  • Over half of graduates working as IT professionals six months after graduation (59%) are from IT degrees and 7% from electrical & electronic engineering degrees.
  • 30% of graduates working as media, literary, design & sports professionals are from design studies degrees and 7% from drama degrees.
  • 20% of engineering professionals are from mechanical engineering degrees, 17% from civil engineering degrees and 11% from electrical & electronic engineering degrees.
  • 17% of graduates working in scientific research, analysis & development occupations are from chemistry degrees, 13% from biology degrees and 5% from physics degrees. An additional 14% are from subjects allied to medicine.
  • 40% of graduates working as nursing & health associate professionals six months after graduating are from nursing degrees and 51% from subjects allied to medicine.
  • 66% of health professionals are from medicine & dentistry degrees and a further 26% from subjects allied to medicine.
