Kirstie's job log: 51
Kirstie Nicols
- March 2010.
The story so far... Kirstie left her job in sales to pursue her dream of journalism and a Masters at Westminster University. Now she wants a chance to apply what she has learnt.
Wow, doesn’t time fly? Not only are we already in February and the weather has thankfully started to cheer up, but I have also just passed a monumental landmark: last week I turned 25 – making me a whole quarter of a century old.
Of course, this means a portion of the last month has been spent wondering what on earth has happened to the last few years, and why I am still technically jobless as well as still living at home. It is also a great motivator for making me get back into looking for work again.
I decided to take a couple of days off work during the week, and headed into London armed with a handful of CVs. I spent the day going to companies I’d quite like to work for and asking if they had any jobs going, leaving a copy of my CV with them. I then spent some time signing up for various recruitment agencies in the afternoon. It was a very long and tiring day, but after all the hard work, I have already managed to elicit a couple of interviews in the next few weeks.
I did the same thing in the area I currently live the next day, although I found that people were a lot less willing to allow me to just turn up unannounced and ask about work! So far the response in my local area hasn’t been as positive as in London – I’ve had no interview offers yet, but I have decided to be optimistic and hope something will come up soon enough.
I also finally took some time to go to the agency that I currently temp for and ask them to try and find me a more permanent position – as well as letting them know that I don’t want to do any more temp work for them after the end of the month. I have been saving money over the past few months, and have enough to not need to work for a while. It’s scary to think that I may not have a proper income for a while, but I also think I’ve stopped looking for proper jobs while I’ve been temping, and this is an attempt to stop the laziness.
In my last blog I mentioned I was going to start volunteering again, and I’ve been looking into this as well. I’ve always had an interest in politics, and with a general election only a few weeks away, I plan to start offering my spare time to help out with a local MP candidate’s election campaign. In fact I’ve already spent the past weekend out in the area campaigning for him, and I’m looking forward to following it right through to election night.
I’m feeling much more optimistic about the next month: with nothing to distract me apart from volunteering on the odd occasion, I should have plenty of time to devote to finding the ideal job, as well as spending time researching and preparing for the all important interviews. I hope to have a lot more job news to share with you this time next month!
