This Case Study belongs to Corporate investment banker.
Beatrijs is a sciences graduate with an MSc in Finance and Strategy.
I was first drawn to J.P. Morgan for its vibrant, dynamic environment. I wanted to join a firm that would challenge me and give me the chance to use my language skills on an international level. My first step was doing an internship with J.P. Morgan - it was here that I discovered some amazing people and a great working atmosphere. Choosing a career in investment banking was the right decision for me - a decision I made after a lot of consideration, researching the industry in which I wanted to work and then spending time actually doing the job during an internship. This type of work appeals to my proactive and enthusiastic nature. Of course, another major incentive to join was the two-month training programme in New York.
The New York experience was amazing. During the day you're taught the basics of corporate finance by some of the best in the business, and in the evening you're free to relax, socialise and have some fun. As well as giving me the skills and confidence I needed to get started, the programme also enabled me to meet the people I'd be working with - many of whom I'm still friends with today. It was a great way of breaking the ice and preparing us all for the world of investment banking when we returned to our respective countries. I found the combination of intense learning coupled with the chance to build a valuable network of great colleagues unique.
The unpredictability of my role can eat into your personal time every now and again, but working in such an open environment with everyone from managing directors to analysts, means we all pull together to get the work done and balance the time to relax. I work hard, but I still get to socialise with friends, go to events and exhibitions, and play sports regularly.
Working in investment banking, you're at the forefront of the financial markets, and you're exposed to a fast paced, dynamic and international environment. Undoubtedly, this makes your job very exciting and challenging, where no two days are the same. It's a great place to start your career.
