Cash and carry manager: Salary and conditions

  • Range of typical starting salaries: approximately £20,000 for an assistant manager and from £25,000 - £30,000 for a deputy manager (salary data collected April 09).
  • Range of typical salaries at senior level: £30,000 - £60,000+ (salary data collected April 09).
  • Salary levels vary according to the size and success of the employer, level of responsibility, and experience, ability and potential. Management salaries are often performance-related.
  • Working hours may involve weekends and evening work. The working day tends to start at 7am, usually finishing between 5pm and 6pm. Some managers work shifts.
  • The work can be physically demanding and store temperatures can be cold, especially if the goods include fresh produce.
  • Self-employment/freelance work is not possible. Although rare, it is possible for wholesale managers to use their expertise to start their own retail outlets.
  • Women are currently under-represented in this area with as many as 95% of managers being male. The exception is in head office locations, where the male to female ratio is more even.
  • Jobs are available in most areas. Wholesaling operations exist throughout the UK and abroad. Some UK companies are part of international groups that may offer opportunities for working abroad, particularly for experienced staff. However, travel is generally incidental and mainly local - to visit customers or for regional meetings.
