Cash and carry manager: Training

New entrants joining a wholesaling operation are taught the business from the bottom up. This means initially working in a hands-on role on the shop floor alongside other staff to gain experience of the range of roles and departments.

Practical experience is normally supported by short, in-house training courses and workshops in different aspects of the business. These may include:

  • manual handling;
  • supervisory skills;
  • category management;
  • first aid;
  • computing.

The Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) , the key research organisation for the food and grocery sector, offers a foundation and postgraduate certificate in food and grocery industry management, which some managers choose to follow. These highly practical courses are aimed at junior and/or middle managers as well as new entrants to the industry.

Larger companies may offer their own in-house training programmes covering every aspect of the business. These can be useful as there is a lot that is unique to cash and carry.

The work requires a range of different skills - planning, organisation, interpersonal and business - which managers must continuously develop throughout their career. A commitment to continuing professional development (CPD) will aid progress through the management structure.
