The main employers are warehouses who wholesale convenience goods such as tobacco; beers, wines and spirits; confectionery; soft drinks; chilled, fresh and frozen foods; and general groceries. Other wholesalers specialise in particular goods, for example, electrical, hardware, gardening equipment and hairdressing and beauty supplies.
Some of the largest companies, such as Booker and Bestway, concentrate on trade-only business and are not open to the general public. Other operators, such as Costco and Makro, have a broader business focus. They are open to the public, but customers may have to join as a member to gain access. There are also smaller independent groups, such as Dhamecha - a chain based in the London area.
The Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) predicts that by 2012 the wholesale market will be split equally between cash and carry outlets and those outlets offering delivery (a facility increasingly popular with trade customers).
