Cinema manager: Salary and conditions

  • Range of typical starting salaries for trainee cinema managers: £16,000 - £20,000 (salary data collected Mar 09).

  • Earnings can include a profits-linked bonus related to audience targets or product and sales commissions.
  • Salaries vary considerably according to geographical location and the type and structure of the organisation. They are likely to be lower in the smaller independent cinemas.
  • Incentives vary according to the size of the company, but can include pensions and life assurance with larger chains. Perks invariably include free film tickets.
  • Working hours typically include regular unsocial hours. Work is mainly within the cinema on a flexible shift basis, often involving late evenings and weekends. In 2007, 64% of box office takings related to screenings from Friday to Sunday (UK Film Council Statistical Yearbook 2008 ).
