This Case Study belongs to Ecologist.
Gregor has always been interested in ecology. When deciding on a career path, having considered and then decided against joining the Army, Gregor applied for an environmental science degree at the University of Plymouth.
During the second year of his degree, Gregor successfully applied for a placement with Andrew McCarthy Associates who are one of the leading independent ecology consultancies. After six weeks on the placement, Gregor was offered paid full-time work for the remainder of the summer, gaining him a valuable three months' work experience.
During his degree, Gregor had the opportunity to develop his understanding of the law and regulations surrounding the law. He considered this to be one of the most valuable aspects to his work. He also valued the knowledge he gained after working in a consultancy and the opportunities to gain practical survey experience.
At the end of his degree course, Gregor was informed about an opportunity to conduct environmental research work in Greece, which was funded by the Leonardo di Vinci programme. Gregor was successful in his application to work for the Archipelagos IMERAS, a Greek environmental NGO, and shortly after graduation spent three months there conduction botanical surveys.
Gregor likes being able to get outside, to study animals and plants, and likes the variety of work and the opportunity it provides to meet similar like-minded people. The less enjoyable aspects for him have been the office-based work which involves writing reports.
Having recently returned from Greece, Gregor is now applying for more permanent positions in ecology. He advises students to gain as many practical skills and as much experience as possible while at university.
Gregor is currently concentrating on gaining more practical skills and qualifications. He plans to get his bat licence and would like to specialise in something, and is considering bats or botanical work. He enjoyed his experience working for Andrew McCarthy Associates and would like to eventually work in consultancy.
