Solicitor: Zoe

This Case Study belongs to Solicitor, Scotland.

Zoe graduated with an LLB in Scots law from Dundee University in 2004. She then went on to do the Diploma in Legal Practice at Dundee University in 2004-05. After that she did her traineeship with Murray, Donald, Drummond, Cook (MDDC) in St. Andrews. She is now a solicitor and notary public with MDDC.

Zoe chose a law degree as she thought it would be varied and interesting. At the time she wasn't sure if she wanted to become a lawyer but she thought the law degree would be a good general degree, which could open many doors in the future.

MDDC advertised at university. Zoe had two interviews: one a general chat and then one that was more formal and included a presentation.

Zoe's tips on getting a job are to try to set yourself apart from other applicants, to get experience in as many firms as you can (summer placements, etc.) and to know what kind of firm you want to go to (small, medium, large, family, commercial, etc.) She also advises that you do your research on the firm you are going for an interview with. For example, find out how many partners are in the firm, who their clients are, etc. To get on in the job you must have a flexible attitude, be able to cope with a large workload, be highly organised and good at oral and written communication.

In the course of her degree, Zoe gained experience and skills in research, analytical work, communication (written and oral), and in working well with others. Some of the subjects on the degree are not that relevant in practice. The diploma in legal practice is more practical and the most useful and relevant to her now.

Zoe feels that she has developed a lot, especially since she qualified. She has a much greater exposure to clients and a larger caseload. Her written and oral skills have improved significantly.

On a regular basis, Zoe's work includes drafting and examining documents, meeting clients, taking complex legal issues and simplifying them for the client, noting interest on property, submitting offers and all other matters associated with house sale and purchases and re-mortgages.

Zoe likes dealing with clients, writing letters and working in a team. She dislikes trying to juggle everything, as this can be quite stressful at times!
